How Stress Affects Your Skin The Hidden Connection Between Mind and Complexion blog post image

Ever notice your skin breaking out right before that big presentation? Or that rash that appears in the middle of family drama? It’s likely happening because stress affects your skin!

Its not just bad timing. Your skin and stress are connected in ways that will surprise you. When life gets tough, your skin typically suffers.

Why Stress Causes Your Skin to Act Out

When you are under stress, your body responds with increased cortisol. Cortisol is the stress hormone that kicks everything into overdrive.

Understanding how stress affects skin starts with cortisol’s impact on your body. The hormone surge sends your oil glands into overtime.

Excess oil + dead skin cells = the formula for breakouts.

And that’s not all. Stress deteriorates your skin’s protective barrier. That leaves your skin super-sensitive to everything from skincare products to pollution.

What Stress Does to Your Skin

Breakouts and Acne

Stress acne is different from regular pimples and even hormonal acne. Stress acne shows up as red, inflamed bumps that hurt when you touch them. You usually see them on your jawline and chin.

Your Skin Gets Cranky

Increased skin sensitivity means products that usually work just fine now burn and sting. Your skin becomes a drama queen and reacts to everything.

Slow Healing

That pimple that would last a week to heal? With stress, it lingers for three weeks. Stress slows down your skin’s healing process.

Premature Aging

Chronic stress annihilates collagen, the protein that keeps your skin taut and elastic. Less collagen means more wrinkles sooner than you’d like.

All of these stress-related skin problems are more common than you think.

Light Therapy That Works

Sunscreen isn’t optional. UV damage + stress damage = rapid aging.

Nighttime Repair

Your skin does most repair work while you sleep. Use retinol products to speed up cell turnover. These will help dark spots from old breakouts disappear.

If you’re battling discoloration, our brightening products work overnight. They even out your complexion gradually while you sleep.

Spot Treatments

Active breakouts need focused help. Our acne care line includes spot treatments that work fast. They calm inflammation without drying out your whole face.

More Than Skincare: Treating the Source

Good products do make a difference, but managing how stress affects your skin means addressing the root cause

  • Exercise reduces stress hormones by half.
  • Proper sleep allows your skin time to heal.
  • Even five minutes of deep breathing can lower cortisol levels.

Your skin notices these small changes.

Stress impacts each person in a different way. What causes your friend to break out may have no effect at all on your skinIt’s all about discovering what will work best for your individual case.

Frequently Asked Questions

You might see something within 1-2 days. But the worst of it doesn’t show up until after a week. That’s how long it takes for stress hormones to really mess with your oil production.

Will my skin improve when stress goes away?

Not necessarily. Damage that’s already present needs to be treated. But less stress definitely helps prevent new problems from arising.

Can treatments prevent stress breakouts?

Yes. Regular IPL sessions and good skincare are excellent for breakout prevention, making your skin more resistant to stress. Healthy skin will fight off stress damage better.

What makes stress acne different?

Stress acne is more painful and takes longer to heal. Stress acne will cluster on your jawline and chin. It’s also more likely to cause dark spots after it has cleared.

la bella vita skin care products are perfect for a healthy skincare routine

We do so much for our skin, all in the name of achieving and maintaining a youthful, dewy glow. While we focus on using the right products for our skin type, it’s easy to overlook an essential element of an effective beauty regimen: Following the proper skincare routine order to ensure your skin receives the FULL benefits of each product. Don’t stress over using every product type listed below. The order of skin care products matters, but the number of products you use is less important. Start fresh next week with some of our favorite skin care products here at La Bella Vita!

Step 1: Cleanse (A.M. and P.M.)

First things first. Cleansing always takes precedence. Before applying your skincare products, always remove your makeup and cleanse your face with a cleanser that best suits your skin type. Clean skin that is completely free of oil and grim is essential for ingredients to absorb properly. Ask us about our LBV Gentle Antioxidant Suds cleanser – rich in antioxidants and infused with peptides and green tea polyphenols that nourishes and restores the skin. This luxurious soothing cleanser is perfect for all skin types and will leave your skin feeling refreshed and hydrated!

Step 2: Tone (A.M. and P.M.)

Toners are designed to replenish skin through hydration and remove dead cells and dirt left behind after cleansing. They are essentially priming your face for ingredients to be better absorbed later on. If you are suffering from acne, look for a toner filled with either BHA (beta hydroxyl acid, like salicylic acid) or AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid, like glycolic acid or lactic acid), which work to unclog pores, prevent breakouts, and dissolve blackheads over time. If you’ve got dry skin, try AHA’s, and if you’ve got oily skin, stick with BHAs. If you’ve got any other skin type, you can opt for a hydrating toner, which helps replenish the water your skin barrier lost when you washed and dried your face.

Step 3: Serum (A.M. and P.M.)

Serums are super-concentrated doses of nutrients, hydrators, and antioxidants that immediately improve the health of your skin after application. We recommend using our LBV Vitamin C Brightening Serum in your A.M. skincare routine to help support collagen production, visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and discoloration, and protect the skin from free radical damage. For your P.M. routine, choose a serum containing hyaluronic acid, which draws water from the atmosphere into your skin to plump it up and keep it hydrated while you sleep. We can’t say enough great things about our LBV Ultra Hydrating Serum – made with fractionated hyaluronic acid that quenches dehydrated skin for a supple, smooth complexion. It also visibly reduces the signs of aging; skin appears brighter, firmer and rejuvenated!

Step 4: Eye Cream (A.M. and P.M.)

The area beneath the eyes tends to show signs of dehydration and volume loss earlier because the skin there is much thinner – and therefore more delicate – than anywhere else on the body. Studies show that the under-eye area has fewer oil glands and collagen, making it even more difficult to keep as hydrated and plump as the skin on the rest of your face. Eye creams are designed for the sensitive skin around your eyes and can help reduce signs of aging, such as wrinkles and discoloration.

Step 5: Moisturizer (A.M. and P.M.)

Moisturizer is an essential step to anyone’s skincare routine because it’s the only thing that will keep your skin barrier healthy and happy. A moisturizer not only infuses your skin with hydration, but it also helps trap in all the products underneath it to make the ingredients even more effective.

For your A.M. routine, get a formula with a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 in it. We LOVE the Journee® Revitalizing Day Cream. Not only does it provide broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, but it also offers your skin revitalization, antioxidant care, as well as lasting hydration.

Your P.M. moisturizer should contain all the ingredients that your body naturally generates and can use more of, such as hyaluronic acid, lipids, and proteins. Our go-to P.M. moisturizers are LBV’s Fortified Moisturizer and Enriched Bio Hydration Repair Cream. Our Fortified Moisturizer is a moisture-enriched facial cream fortified with ceramides and a rich blend of antioxidants to help achieve smoother, softer skin while assisting in the minimizing of free radical-induced skin damage. Our Enriched Bio Hydration Repair Cream provides intense moisturization and age defying benefits, nourishing dry skin back to optimum health.

Our staff’s favorite products:

Ashley “One of my favorite products is the Ultra Hydrating Serum. I love it because it’s super hydrating, and it has antioxidants and peptides that leave my skin feeling nourished!”

Hope “My favorite product is the Brightening Serum! It smells amazing, but also helps lighten the dark spots left by previous acne.”

Grace “I love the gentle cleanser! I have super sensitive skin and this cleanser never irritates it!”

injecting dermal filler into forehead lines
Dr. Turnure working his magic with Botox on the forehead!

No matter how much we take care of our skin, everyone eventually develops facial wrinkles. Fortunately, many of the fine lines and wrinkles that accompany aging can be reduced or softened with aesthetic treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers.

How to Botox and Dermal Fillers Work?

The active ingredient in Botox causes certain facial muscles to relax, while dermal fillers plump your skin in areas with wrinkles to reduce their appearance. Botox results typically last between three and six months, while dermal fillers produce results that can last up to two years. Many patients combine Botox with dermal fillers to maintain a youthful appearance as long as possible.

While it is true that injectables are not permanent and will break down over time, there are many things you can do to extend the time between visits to La Bella Vita Medispa for your Botox and filler injections.

How to Make the Most of your Injectable Wrinkle Reducers

let’s talk about how to make them last as long as possible…

Protect Your Skin

You’re likely well aware that too much sun exposure can damage your skin, causing not only uneven skin tones and spots, but those wrinkles you’re looking to prevent in the first place. Facial skin, which is thinner and more delicate in certain places, burns more easily even with sunblock. If possible, limit your time in the sun, especially during peak hours. If you will be outdoors for an extended period of time, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect your beautiful face!

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water on a daily basis will naturally plump your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Eat Nutritious Foods

Good nutrition is always essential for keeping your skin looking plump and healthy. Sugar binds with collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, weighing them down and causing wrinkles. Increase your leafy greens and foods high in good omega fats such as fish and nuts.

Ensure Your Skincare Routine is On Point

Having a good quality skincare routine is very important to help make Botox and fillers last longer. Dehydration is one of the leading causes for aging, meaning that skin which is quenched will likely experience less fine lines and wrinkles on the whole. As us about our medical-grade  La Bella Vita skincare products that are the perfect accompaniment to Botox and dermal fillers.

Don’t Smoke and Limit Alcohol

Managing the amount you drink and cutting out smoking are two of the best things you can do to not only aid your healthy lifestyle, but to keep fillers and Botox looking fresher for longer. Nicotine impairs blood flow to your skin by narrowing blood vessels, which means less moisture gets to the skin. And, smoke makes you squint your eyes, which leads to more wrinkles over time. Alcohol is dehydrating and thins the blood which can contribute to bruising or even bleeding after treatments. Plus, it’s not good for your stress levels either!

Keep Stress Levels to a Minimum

It can be hard in the modern world we live in these days, but keeping your stress levels down is essential. Stress releases cortisol, a hormone that inhibits collagen and elastin production, which leads to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Find healthy ways to manage stress so you can avoid these spikes in cortisol that cause premature aging.

Follow Post-Care Instructions

Be sure to follow all of the post-care instructions we give you to lower your risk for problems that may compromise your results. The more you adhere to our recommendations, the more likely the procedure will have the best outcome!

Be Patient

It can take 7-10 days to see the full effects of Botox injections. During your consultation, we’ll go over your skincare goals and then provide realistic feedback regarding what you should expect.

At La Bella Vita Medispa, we enjoy helping our patients develop a plan for Botox and filler upkeep, which makes it a breeze to maintain your results! Schedule your Botox or filler (OR BOTH!) consultation today, 916-624-4959.

why you need good sleep

When it comes to your beauty routine, you can get some help from La Bella Vita Medi Spa Inc. in Rocklin and try Botox to look more rested, or opt for the natural route and actually get a good night’s sleep!

Sleep may be the closest thing there is to a Fountain of Youth. We love this sentiment, especially as it relates to ‘natural’ beauty.

How Beauty Is Impacted by Sleep

The truth is, beauty does come from within. It’s grown and replenished there, while you sleep. How well you sleep can determine how well you age, and can improve your health in so many other ways too.

We believe that sleep is the world’s easiest, and most effective, natural beauty regime. When you sleep:

  • Your body goes to work repairing and rebalancing your skin – from ph to proteins like collagen.
  • Your body also boosts blood flow to your skin when you sleep, giving you a healthy glow when you wake in the morning.
  • Plenty of rest can also help minimize dark circles under your eyes – another tell-tale sign of tiny blood vessels ‘pooling’ under the thin delicate skin.
  • Sleep deprivation causes a decrease in blood flow to the skin surrounding your face, causing dull skin and the disappearance of rosy cheeks.

How Poor Sleep Causes Aging

Beneath the surface, your body is aging too, and sleep loss can speed up the process. A study done by UCLA researchers discovered that just a single night of insufficient sleep can make an older adults’ cells age quicker. This might not seem like a big deal, but it has the potential to bring on a lot of other diseases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lack of sleep can be directly linked to certain health issues like high blood pressure, type two diabetes, obesity, heart disease, asthma and depression. Also, a 2014 study found that sleeping six hours or less per night can even increase one’s chances of having a car crash by 33%!

How to Improve Sleep Quality

You can sleep for a sufficient number of hours, but not obtain the right quality of sleep. We need to appreciate the importance of sleep quality. So, if you are looking for your own fountain of youth, look no further than these sleep tips:

  • Increase bright light exposure during the day – Your body has a natural time-keeping clock known as your circadian rhythm. It affects your brain, body, and hormones, helping you stay awake and telling your body when it’s time to sleep. Natural sunlight or bright light during the day helps keep your circadian rhythm healthy. This improves daytime energy, as well as nighttime sleep quality and duration.
  • Reduce blue light exposure in the evening – Blue light – which electronic devices like smartphones and computers emit in large amounts – affects your circadian rhythm, tricking your brain into thinking it’s still daytime.
  • Don’t consume caffeine late in the day
  • Reduce irregular or long daytime naps
  • Try to sleep and wake at consistent times
  • Don’t eat late in the evening
  • Exercise regularly, but not before bed
  • Get a comfortable  bed, mattress, and pillow

Good Sleep Is Critical to Your Health

Bottom line, good sleep health is central to overall physical and mental health, quality of life, and quantity of life…THE REAL FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH! Sleep is the most effective way to recharge your health and replenish that youthful vitality. However, we tend to take this all-important health habit for granted. So, break that cycle in your own life and improve your sleep cycle so you can look and feel your absolute best at any age!

Already have good sleep health?

Let’s be honest with one another. Everyone wants to look their best, and this usually means looking younger. You can exercise and watch your weight faithfully, but your face will give away your age with frown or laugh lines, and crow’s feet. Injectable fillers and Botox will temporarily reduce the signs of aging. By relaxing muscles in the face and filling in certain areas, these two powerful anti-aging agents can make people appear dramatically younger. We can help you in this department! Call to schedule your Botox and/or filler appointment today, 916-624-4959.

Summer is here! The days are getting longer and the weather is warming up which means more time outdoors. Time to talk skin aging and SUNSCREEN!

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen every day that you plan to be outside. While sunscreen protects against sunburns and skin cancer, there is another benefit: It helps reduce signs of skin aging.

Reduce Skin Aging with Quality Sunscreen

Did you know that ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause more than 90 percent of the visible signs of aging, which includes wrinkles, rough patches, sagging and hyperpigmentation?

The most important product in ANY skin care regime should be sun protection. Make SPF your friend by incorporating it into your morning skincare routine. We advise our patients to use sunscreen that offers broad spectrum protection and has a minimum SPF of 30, which blocks about 97 percent of UV rays.

The Two Types of Sun Rays

There are two types of sun rays that can damage your skin in different ways. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns, while UVA rays can lead to aging and the development of skin cancer.

Skin damage from sun exposure occurs for a few reasons.

  • Sun exposure depletes collagen, which keeps the skin smooth and firm.
  • It can dilate blood vessels to give skin a red tone.
  • And, it causes the brown pigment in the skin to be more pronounced, which can make the skin look blotchy.
  • It also creates something called elastotic material, which creates a cobblestone appearance in the skin.

What Sunscreens are Best?

When it comes to sunscreen, a broad spectrum sunscreen works best because it protects you from UVB and UVA rays, that is from sunburn and skin cancer. A lot of people are unaware that there are two types of sunscreen:

Chemical and Physical Sunscreens – What’s the difference?

Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone. Chemical sunscreens are absorbers of UV rays as they attempt to enter the skin.

Physical sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect damaging UV rays away from the skin.

When choosing a sunscreen, you have a few decisions to make.

First, are you slathering up with a physical or chemical sunscreen?

Does it even matter which one you use?

Well, it might. There are pros and cons to both, which we will cover below. Sunscreen itself is non-negotiable, of course, but we’ve got all the info you need to choose the best option for your sun protection needs:

Chemical Sunscreen

Pros:

  • Less is needed to protect the skin because there is no risk of spaces between the sunscreen molecules after application
  • Tends to be thinner and spreads more easily on the skin

Cons:

  • Requires about 20 minutes after application before it starts to work
  • Increased chance of irritation and stinging due to the multiple ingredients combined in order to achieve broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection
  • The higher the SPF, the higher the risk of irritation for sensitive skin types
  • The protection it offers gets used up more quickly when in direct UV light, so reapplication must be more frequent
  • May clog pores for oily skin types

Physical Sunscreen

Pros:

  • Less irritating and a better fit for sensitive skin.

Cons:

  • Can rub off, sweat off and rinse off easily, meaning more frequent reapplication when outdoors as needed
  • May leave a white film on the skin, making some formulas incompatible for medium to dark skin tones
  • Can be less protective if not applied and re-applied generously and accurately since UV light can get between the sunscreen molecules and get into the skin.

Make Sunscreen Part of Your Daily Skincare Routine

Regardless of which sunscreen you choose, it’s important to make it a part of your daily skin care routine. When you apply sunscreen you should use about one ounce to cover up ANY exposed skin. This is the size of a standard shot glass and will fill up your palm.

If you choose a sunscreen that’s broad-spectrum, water-resistant, and SPF 30 or higher, you should apply your sunscreen at least 20 minutes before heading outside.

It’s important to wear sunscreen even on cloudy days since UV rays can go through clouds and reach your skin. Because of this apply generous amounts to your face, neck, and ears each time you go outside, EVERY DAY.

reduce stress-related hair loss

Are you suffering from stress-related hair loss? Did you notice your hair getting thinner or even falling out during the stressful COVID-19 pandemic?  If so, you’re not alone.

Many people experienced hair loss after recovering from COVID-19 because of a stress-induced condition called telogen effluvium. This condition typically occurs around two to three months after a stressful event by disrupting the hair’s natural growth cycle, leading to excessive shedding and hair loss.

What is Abnormal for Hair Loss?

At any given time, about 90% of our hair is growing, about 5% is resting and 5% is shedding. However, when you have a major stress event or shock, up to 50% of hairs can be pushed into the shedding phase. Several factors can contribute to this condition including surgery, general anesthesia, physical or psychological stress, high fevers, weight loss, diet change, or even hormonal change such as after childbirth.

How to Reduce Hair Loss

Telogen effluvium isn’t permanent, and hair will typically grow back as long as stress levels are reduced. Some steps you can take to help reduce your stress levels include exercise, practicing mindfulness, prioritizing sleep, and having healthy relationships.

It’s also important to focus on good nutrition. Hair needs good nutrition to grow and be healthy, especially protein and key vitamins and minerals. Whether through diet or supplements, be sure to get enough of Protein, Iron, Vitamin C and D, Zinc, Folic Acid, and Vitamin B12.

How Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Might Help with Hair Loss

Ask us about Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP therapy is an innovative procedure that has become increasingly popular for its ability to stimulate new hair growth in the scalp. PRP is platelet-rich plasma that contains 8 identifiable growth factors within our own blood. The platelet-rich plasma stimulates healing and improves collagen production as well as facilitates circulation.

The minimally-invasive procedure consists of Dr. Turnure injecting your own platelet-rich plasma directly into your scalp, focusing on the areas that have excessive hair loss or thinning. The result is the regrowth of your natural hair!

When people start losing their hair, especially for the first time, it can be very worrisome and  upsetting. Interested in learning more about PRP therapy at La Bella Vita Medispa? Call us at (916) 624-4959 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Turnure.

collagen and healthy skin

Collagen is a protein responsible for healthy joints and skin elasticity, or stretchiness. It’s in your bones, muscles, and blood, compromising three quarters of your skin and a third of the protein in your body. Collagen is what keeps our skin from sagging, giving us that plump, youthful look. So why is collagen important and how can you reduce collagen loss?

Why You Need To More Collagen

As we age, existing collagen breaks down, and it gets harder for your body to produce more. We begin to lose about 1% of our collagen per year in our mid-20’s and lose as much as 30% during the first five years of menopause.

How to Add Collagen to Your Diet

All collagen starts off as procollagen. Your body makes procollagen by combining two amino acids – glycine and proline. This process uses vitamin C. You may be able to help your body produce this important protein by making sure you get plenty of the following nutrients:

  • Vitamin C. Large amounts are found in citrus fruits, bell peppers and strawberries.
  • Proline: Large amounts are found in egg whites, wheat germ, dairy products, cabbage, asparagus, and mushrooms.
  • Copper: Large amounts are found in organ meats, sesame seeds, cocoa powder, cashews, and lentils.

In addition, your body needs high quality protein that contains the amino acids needed to make new proteins. Meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, legumes, and tofu are all excellent sources of amino acids.

How to Reduce Collagen Loss

It’s also important to avoid collagen-destroying behaviors such as:

  • Eating too much sugar and refined carbs. Sugar interferes with collagen’s ability to repair itself.
  • Getting too much sunshine. Ultraviolet radiation can reduce collagen production.
  • Smoking. Smoking reduces collagen production which can impair wound healing and lead to wrinkles.

Interestingly, laser skin rejuvenation treatments use light and heat energy to cause controlled damage to the surface of the skin, so that your body reacts to heal the tissue by creating new skin. The result? Collagen production!

Fractional Laser Treatments

We get a lot of questions about fractional CO2 laser treatments, with most queries centered around the difference between laser skin rejuvenation and IPL.

Fractional laser treatments can lead to dramatic improvements in the skin.

  • These lasers deliver energy to columns of skin which stimulate skin cells to contract and to produce new collagen.
  • These lasers reduce wrinkles and fine lines and can also help to soften deeper lines.
  • They also treat scars including acne scars.

Results of these fractional laser treatments can be maximized with proper skin care both before and after the treatment. Our skilled staff can help you devise the appropriate skin care regimen to complement your procedure.

The holidays are just around the corner! Many of us have a tradition of traveling home to visit family and friends for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah or Christmas, or going on vacation during the holidays. The CDC’s public-health advisory continues to recommend that every American wear a cloth face covering in public to curb the spread of COVID-19 and variants.

Maskne Breakouts

As if stress breakouts weren’t bad enough, we now have to deal with ‘maskne’- acne breakouts and skin problems from wearing face masks.  Protecting your face with a mask creates a build-up of moisture from the air inside of the mask since your breathing is being trapped. This can lead to a build-up of sweat and oil on your skin under the mask, which can lead to inflammation, rashes, and even acne breakouts…not to mention the dirt and makeup that can get trapped underneath!

Also, friction from the mask rubbing can cause irritant contact dermatitis.

Add on the fact that face masks are occlusive [designed to block things] by nature, which is a recipe for skin disaster.

How to Minimize Your Risks of Getting Maskne Breakouts

The good news is, you can minimize your chances of acquiring ‘maskne’ this holiday season and keep your skin looking and feeling healthy with that ‘holiday glow’ all while wearing a protective face! Here are some tips:

1. Cleanse Your Face Daily

When washing your face, use a quality foaming cleanser like our Sly/Sal 2-2 Foaming Cleanser. Foaming cleansers remove oil more effectively than hydrating oils or balms.

Our cleanser combines the power of an Alpha-Hydroxy Acid with a Beta-Hydroxy Acid. Together, these acids exfoliate the outer most layer of your skin to reduce redness, swelling, and help unclog pores.

If you are struggling with breakouts, texture, oiliness, or enlarged pores, this cleanser is for you!

2. Moisturize Your Face Daily

Next, it’s important to apply a lightweight moisturizer. Since dry skin is a common complaint, you want to make sure your skin barrier is in the best shape possible, which means it’s both balanced and hydrated.

Since dry skin is a common face mask skin problem, applying moisturizer adds a protective layer that can reduce dryness. Our Ultra-Hydrating Serum is great for alleviating dry skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and retaining moisture to create plump, healthy skin.

Suffering from oily skin? Ask us about our other skincare moisturizers that are formulated for your skin type.

3. Skip Makeup When Wearing a Mask

Beneath a mask, makeup is more likely to clog your pores and lead to breakouts. If makeup is necessary, use only products labeled “non-comedogenic” or “won’t clog pores.”

4. Wear the Right Mask

To reduce skin problems, look for masks that offer the following:

  • A snug, comfortable fit. If the mask feels too tight or slides around on your face, it can irritate your skin. You’re also more likely to adjust a poorly fitting mask. When you touch your mask, you can transfer germs to your mask and your face.
  • Soft, natural, and breathable fabric, such as cotton. Avoid synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, polyester, and rayon on the layer that rests against your skin. These are more likely to irritate your skin and cause breakouts.

5. Take a 15-Minute Mask Break Every 4 Hours

Healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic have found that this helps save their skin.

Of course, only remove your mask when it’s safe to do so and after washing your hands! Oh, and don’t touch your face!

6. Wash Your Cloth Masks

Don’t forget to give your face covering a daily scrub-down too! Washing it daily to remove oils and skin cells that have collected on the inside prevents a buildup of bacteria on the cloth.

Since a mask rests on your face, harsh chemicals and fragrances in your detergent can cause skin reactions. Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergent.

You can also add a splash of white vinegar, which is a natural antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agent.

Wash your mask in hot water unless the instructions say otherwise.

7. Treat Breakouts with TLC

If you’ve already experienced a bit of irritation, redness or breakouts, schedule a skincare consultation with us. We have a complete skincare line and services for all skin types.

Although wearing face masks is still part of our reality this holiday season, we want to help you get that ‘holiday glow.’ Schedule your skincare consult today and say goodbye to maskne! (916) 624-4959

Losing hair? You’re not alone. According to the American Hair Loss Association, hair loss is a medical condition that affects approximately 50 million men and 30 million women in our country alone!

By the age of 35, a whopping two-thirds of men in the U.S. experience some degree of measurable hair loss; and by the age of 50, approximately 85 percent have significantly thinning hair. Women make up approximately 40% of the hair-loss sufferers in the U.S.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss – also known as alopecia – has many causes and can take on several different patterns such as thinning, circular bald patches, and sudden loosening or coming out in handfuls. Some amount of hair thinning is normal for everyone.

According to WebMD, a strand of hair usually grows for two to six years before it sheds. Most people have about 100,000 strands of hair on their respective heads, and the average person loses between 50 and 100 hairs a day. Excessive hair loss has many causes, including:

  • Aging
  • Chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • Hair trauma from wearing tight hairstyles
  • Medical conditions such as thyroid problems or major infections
  • Pattern baldness due to genetic and hormonal factors
  • Poor nutrition, particularly when characterized by low iron or protein levels
  • Rapid or significant weight loss
  • Severe stress
  • Side effects of medication for birth control, depression, gout, and heart problems
  • Skin conditions like psoriasis or folliculitis

Is Hair Loss Permanent?

Hair loss can be a temporary reaction to certain conditions, but it can also be permanent. When new hair doesn’t grow fast enough to replace the amount of your hair that falls out daily, alopecia occurs. Whether from alopecia, aging, or trauma, hair loss can be an embarrassing condition for people of any age or gender.

What Hair Restoration Options Are There?

Fortunately, we pride ourselves on offering cosmetic services that have you covered from head to toe! When it comes to your head, our Neograft® hair transplant system is helping many of our patients ditch the comb-overs and hats for a much better solution – REAL HAIR!

NeoGraft® Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Technology

NeoGraft® is a revolutionary hair transplant technique that utilizes Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Standard FUE involves the meticulous removal of individual hair follicles from the back of the scalp (where hair is genetically programmed to resist testosterone). NeoGraft® makes use of an automated FUE technology, in which one to four strands of hair are extracted by a programmed surgical ‘punch’ instrument, without having to surgically cut or remove a section of the scalp. The hairs are then transplanted as a group to areas where hair loss has incurred.

This innovative device has a piston-driven motor and uses pneumatic pressure to, essentially, suction out the individual hair grafts. It then applies controlled pneumatic pressure again to insert the grafts into the scalp; hence, why no linear incisions or stitches!  With the NeoGraft system, we’re also able to harvest a higher number of grafts each session than we can using traditional, manual FUE.

There are many advantages to the innovative NeoGraft® technique, including:

  • Innovative integration – faster and more accurate
  • Minimal scarring
  • Painless procedure
  • High follicular and graft acceptance rates
  • Fast recovery
  • Safe and effective
  • Permanent results
